Cleaning Up/Cleaning Sunroom glass

Question
I moved into this house with a sunroom with glass roof, very beautiful. But I also have this huge oak tree and all the leaves and flowers fell to make a big mess on the glass roof. I cleaned off the leaves and flowers, but the stain still remains. I used the outdoor window cleaner, but the stains do not go away. How do I make the glass clean? Please help......

Answer
Judy,

First of all, congratulations on the new house!

Now about that atrium roof, the most important thing I can tell you is DO NOT try to get on top of that roof and clean it. One small accident could cost you your life. The very best way to clean a roof like this is to hire a professional (don't let them try and climb on the roof either).

If you have to clean the roof by yourself, you may need scaffolding to get the outside of the tops clean. Even then, you will need an extension pole. You can pick up a 'water fed' type extension pole at a local home improvement store or at an auto parts store. Get one with a brush on the end of it.

If you hire a professional, ask if they use water fed poles and DI (deionized) water. DI water is a very pure water and will do an excellent job. But if you are doing the job yourself, it will not be as easy for you to obtain.

If you do try this on your own, I would suggest you go about it this way:

1. Rent scaffolding that puts you a foot above the highest point of the glass roof line.

2. Wear non slip rubber boots.

3. Take your new water fed pole with a brush on the end and from the scaffolding brush off the top of the windows while water is running through the pole. Rinse well.

You have two options at this point:

1. Use a soapy strip washer (the tool professional window cleaners use that looks like lamb's wool T bar) and then a professional squeegee to finish off the job from the top of the scaffolding. (Both of these items can also be purchased at a hardware store and put on the end of an extension pole.)

OR:

2. Purchase a product like Mr Clean AutoDry that you can use as a spot free rinse. (Also can be obtained in an auto parts store.)

As I said, it's a big, big job best given to a professional.

Let me know how it turns out!

Sincerely,

Robert Lamb
