Cleaning Up/liquidating an estate

Question
Hi I'm totally overwhelmed. I have moved from my Victorian house to my father's early american in Maine. I realize this is all too big, too much, and too isolated. I need to go through all my mother's lifetime of collecting early american, oriental, and greek items, family heirlooms, and all my things I've yet to unpack. Given that my father is retired, I'm 55 and my son is 15, the money from the estate is what we'll need to live on. Where do I begin?

Do you have any suggestions as to how to sort and sell a whole huge house full of things? Or is there a book or someone you know who might be able to get me started. I am enough of a novice (and foolishly trusting) that I'm so concerned about my own ignorgance. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Answer
I can understand your feeling of overwhelm and I agree that looking for people to help is a good idea, since someone who is giving you a price might not be honest.

I have found a listing of people, I do not know any of them, but it looks like a good start. And since they are part of an association I'm guessing they have a code of ethics.

Good luck with the project. Remember to keep it simple, break up large tasks into small more doable parts. And it might help to grab a 3 ring notebook, fill it with sheet protectors and a few 3 hold punched folders.

Then use that for all the info. you'll need to reference. Business cards, contracts, ideas, notes and so much more.

Here is the list, I hope it helps. Jamie
