Question
what is the one foolproof, guaranteed method, (not glue/spring traps, please, they dont work)of getting rid of domestic vermin?

Answer
Thank you for taking the time to send in your question. This is not anywhere near my area of expertise. However I do want to try to help you.

I asked around and did some online research turns out there is a recipe for an Easy Mice Repellent

Add 1 tablespoon of Tabasco sauce and 1/2 cup of
soap detergent to 1 gallon of water. Use this to
spray around the bottom of the barn-inside and
out-to repel mice.

Also looks like they are offended by pure Peppermint Oil with pure Spearmint Oil, you could make a mixture from essential oils.

Lastly there is a message board that might have more ideas or you could ask there as well http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-hgenvironmen/?redirCnt=1

Best of luck to you, I hope this helps. Have a mouse-free day :)
