Question
I have a clock that is about 30 years old that recently has stopped running. Actually it runs for 2- 3 minutes then stops. The bands are very tight on both sides. Is this a because it has been wound too tight?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Stan,
"Winding too tight" or "overwinding" is probably the most common myth in clock repair. A clock cannot be wound too tight, unless it is wound so hard that the mainspring breaks.
Running for only a few minutes before stopping most often indicates that the pendulum is out of beat. Please see my answered questions for information on checking and setting the beat.
31 Day clocks are usually Korean or other Asian movements, and 30 years is long past the expected lifespan of these movements. Your clock may need a new movement or overhaul.
