Clocks, Watches/Welby mantle clock

Question
Hi,
I have a Welby mantle clock that has a floating balance. I read your reply to a problem in June. My clock is running slow (about 5 minutes per day). I see the 3 prongs on the balance wheel but they do not move, at least with a small amount of pressure. Can you tell me with this clock how to adjust.
Thanks
Roger

Answer
Hi Roger,
The prong device can be quite tight on the balance wheel. You need to hold the balance wheel steady, making sure that you do not push it up, down, left of right, then move the prong toward the "+" (to the right) to make the clock run faster. Admittedly, this is a somewhat unnerving process. But, as long as the pressure you exert is on the prong only, and not on the balance wheel, it will not damage the clock. The best tool for this is a pair of clockmakers tweezers, but you can also use a very small screwdriver. Caution is, of course, recommended.
