Question
Hello Mr. Perkins

Sir, I have an English tall case clock made by John Jackson, Henly made circa 1787. It has a 30 hour bird cage movement having an endless rope for the weight. Try as I might, I cannot figure out the proper method of connecting the rope ends- can you advise me on the proper technique, equipment, tricks, ect...

Gratefully,

Lee Hamrick

Answer
It has been many years since I worked upon this type clock and my memories are vague.  If memory serves me correctly there were two weights, one small, (used to establish friction for the rope) and a large weight that applied motive force.  There were a series of pulleys involved, one from whence the large weight was hung and two more, one on either side of the train.  Like I say my memory is very vague.  Maybe if you could send my some pictures, they coulc refresh my memory.  For what ever it is worth it seems like the memory is close to the surface.  If you send pictures send them to my e-mail address <flashpowder@hotmail.com> Use continuos rope as subject.  I regret to say I need help to help you.  Regards WJP
