Question

Helbros Watch
I have a watch that was given to me by my grandfather, I am unsure if it is worth fixing or sell for scrap.
There are no markings on the stainless steel back, inside it says HELBROS WATCH CO.then SWISS then 238 in a box followed by ADJUSTED then SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS. I have read a couple of your answers and I look forward to what you might be able to tell me about this watch. It appears to be gold but no markings of karats. I am unsure of it's age. I have attached a picture that I hope will help.

Answer
Tyron,

Helbros was a middle-of-the-road manufacturer of watches.  They made decent watches but not high grade.

17 jewels is a good movement and will still keep acurate time, even by today's standards.

If it is not marked as gold, then it is not.  It is likely to be gold plated or gold filled, if anything.

Worth fixing is a personal decision.  I have fixed many watches that were, from a financial standpoint alone, not worth fixing.  Once one adds the sentimental value, however, ...

In non-working condition, you will maybe get 5 dollars.  Working condtion might get you 20 or 30, maybe a little more.  Fixing it will cost about $100.  From a financial standpoint, it is not worth fixing.

You probably can't get anything for it in scrap content.
