Clocks, Watches/Mauthe mantel clock
Expert: Kenneth Saunders - 11/25/2008
QuestionQUESTION: Hi,
I have a mantle clock. It is of Bonapte Hat style popular in the lat 1940's and eaely 50's The marking on the moverment are "F MAUTHE GERMANY" enclosed inside an oval, with F Mauthe on top and with the word Germany underneath. Other markings are W500 iv, 3962, 14/179.
What i need to know is where I can find parts for this clock as it has a broken suspension spring. I also suspect that others parts of the escape mechanism will need repair as the clock moverment incorrectly repaired ( that is about as polite as I can say about the previous repairer).
ANSWER: any clock repair facility (bring the 2 pieces if you have them)

QUESTION: Hi,
I took the spring along with the clock to our local Jeweler and watch maker (advistered on front of shop). He stated that that they did not repair old clocks anymore and suggested I put a quartz movement in the clock. n.d. I also asked the next jeweller (Townsville 100 miles) he said that he sends his clocks to Ingham about 150 miles one way. He also told me I may have to wait a while as the last clocks he sent were over 2 years and they have still not been returned.
As well as the broken spring which I cannot see in the catalog you recommended. I have taken photos of the spring as it is an unusal spring photos attached.
The other problem is the suspenion point where the spring hangs from. To mind mind it should be vertical, as can be seen fro the picture it is not.
Your help in ths matter will be greatly appreciated.

PS Can I send more than 1 image on this system.
Answerimage is fine -
for goodness sake do not listen to your local jeweler about the quartz movement. I would like to take him to the woodshed!
and don't send anything to Ingham, either!
email this man and ask him if he has a PM-CU21 pendulum leader that you can buy, it is the part you need. If not let me know and I will try to get you some one in Australia you can send just the part to to get it repaired quickly.
