Question
I recently inherited a Grandfather clock with the markings Urgos UW03012A on the back of the works.  I don't know anything about the clock, other than my grandfather built the case and ordered the works from Germany.   I'm looking for any information or history related to this type of clock and/or manufacturer.   In addition, I don't understand how the moon dial (seems seasonal, possibly a calendar) works.   Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks, Eric

Answer
From what you say your clcok is what is called a kit clock.  Quite a number such firms had short life.  Others, such as the Emperor clock Company have prospered and still very much in business.  The kit company would sell a builder all the precut wood and everything else needed for the purchasure to assemble a clock.  Many of these firms selected Urgos as a movement supplier.  The cases would be designed around the movements.  Sometimes the name of the kit company would be on the dial, whatever that name, it would be the clocks brand.  I.e., Emperor, Viking, Old American, St. Charles, etc.  Although Urgos went out of production many years ago, quite a few new movements are still available, if not Hermle makes near exact replacement movements.  Now, as to the moon-dial.  Go to the following site <www.howtorepairclocks.com/clock-repair/grandfather/moon-dial-adjustment.html>  this will explain both function and setting.  Wish you luck.  Regards WJP
