Question
hi martin,
i recently purchased this clock in an auction. there is a part missing from the pendulum. i think it is a link part (maybe plastic) missing between the pendulum and the top shaft.the clock will function without pendulum at a high speed but when i attach pendulum the clock stops. markings on the mechanism are original kieninger made in Germany, 80cm and a circle with the letters A,K and what looks like a C backwards inside it!if you could help me with this problem it would be greatly appreciated.

Answer

Pendulum leader assemb
Hi Seamus,

I'm not sure which part is missing, but it sounds like it might be the suspension spring. I have attached a labeled photo of the pendulum suspension assembly on a similar clock. The clock in the photo is not the same as yours, but the parts are all similar.

The pendulum hooks onto the pendulum leader, the leader hooks onto the suspension spring, and the suspension spring is held by a screw or taper pin onto the top post. Also, the crutch connects with the leader, either by a post on the crutch going through a hole in the leader, or by a fork on the crutch going around the leader.

A clock will always run fast when it is unencumbered by the resistance of the heavy pendulum. If any of the above parts are missing, the clock will not run with the pendulum attached. Additionally, once the pendulum is properly connected, it must be put "in beat" or it will not run. Please browse my previous answers for detailed information on setting the beat.

Suspension springs and leaders are available from most any clock supply house.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
