Question
I have an Elgin pocketwatch that was my great-grandfather's. On the movement, it is labeled Elgin Natl. Watch Co and an apparent serial number of 7460883 and on one piece it says 19 jewels.

On the inside of the back cover, it says Star W. C. Co., Emperor Quality, and 0476113 and has several marks etched into the metal.

According to one website, assuming the serial number on the movement is the corect one for the watch, it was made in 1897.

I have several questions.
Is the serial number on the movement the correct one to date the watch?
What is the Star W.C. Co. on the inside of the case?
Is this indeed a man's watch? It is smallish, perhaps a dress watch, but my wife thinks it is a woman's watch. I don't think it is, but would like to verify.

Thank You!

Answer
Steve,

Yes, the serial number on the movement is what is used to date the watch.

Star Watch Case Company.

How small is the watch?  If it is about the size of a silver dollar or bigger, it is a man's watch.  Smaller than that would be a lady's.

Kind regards,

Melvin
