Question
Mr. Perkins,
I have a 8-day ships clock "made in West Germany for Swift Instruments Boston 25 Mass" The diameter is 6 inches. The casing is probably nickel/brass. The face has a temperature dial just above the "6".
It's been ticking since I wound it up Tuesday. I'm not sure that the ships strike bell rings.
I'm unable to find any history on this clock. I don't see a serial number to indicate its origins, date of manufacture, etc.
Your help is appreciated.
Many thanks!
Rob

Answer
Swift did not make movements themselves.  They purchased movements from other providors placing their name on the case and sometimes the dial.  You would have to access the back of the clock movement to detiremine the actual maker.  This information is most likely a set of numbers, such as 132-071, a name or logo.  Armed with such data my position for researc would be greatly enhanced.  Regards WJP
