Question
QUESTION: Hi Martin

I have just acquired a Schatz quartz clock which has developed a fault. I have taken it to my local repair shop, who has told me that he has never seen a quartz movement like it. If it is beyond local repair, what alternatve movements can be used or where can I get another Schatz movement? I have heard that a firm called Junghans also made quartz movements for Schatz.

Hope you can help, have a great day.

Dafyn

All help welcome

ANSWER: Hi Dafyn,
I don't know what type of clock you have, but a Schatz would most likely be an Anniversary (400-Day) or ship's clock. Replacing original quartz movements can be a real problem. Numerous quartz movements are available from clock supply houses like Timesavers, Merritts Antiques or Empire Clock.
You may be able to find one which, even if not identical to your original, will fit and work in your clock. Anniversary clocks have the additional complication that they often use one movement for the time and a separate one (in the base of the clock) for the revolving pendulum balls. Schatz quartz clocks sometimes use Hermle movements, which are available from the above supply houses. Without seeing your clock, I'm afraid that is all the assistance I can provide.

QUESTION: Hi Martin

Sorry, I forgot to say! I assume it to be a Royal Mariner, ship clock, although I would say it is over 20 years old, along with the ships bell action (although I'm not bothered if this doesn't work, as it is used at home)

Thanks again

Dafyn

Answer
Hi again Dafyn,
I have discovered that Empire Clock (www.empireclock.com)has Hermle ships bell quartz movements available. This may very well be the same movement that was originally in your clock. Even if it is not, it may fit in your clock. I hope this additional information is helful to you.
