Clocks, Watches/Volume of chimes

Question
Our grandfather clock works great but the chimes are just too loud for the room we have it in. Is there a way to turn down the volume?

Answer
The simplest, and my personal recommendation, is is to bend the hammers back, so that they strike their chime rods with less force.  Another is to replace the hammer faces with softer material, yet another is to reduce the tension on the hammer springs.  Hope this does it for you.  Regards WJP
