Question
hi there,we have just purchased a franze hermle mantle clock, and after winding it up and waiting  it did not strike, could you tell me why this may be,or could it be that there is a shut off lever that we have not been able to locate thank you

Answer
Hi David,
There are many possible causes of striking failures. First, make sure that all keyholes are wound all the way, as far as they will go. If there is a shutoff lever, it will most likely be in the dial, usually near the "3". Also look inside the clock from the back for L-shaped levers pressing down on the chime or strike hammers. If necessary, pivot these levers away from the chime hammers.
If none of these suggestions help, your clock may need lubrication or, if it is over 12 years old or so, the movement may be worn and need replacement.
