Clocks, Watches/suspension spring for a Viking Odyssey clock
Expert: William J Perkins - 2/1/2008
QuestionI have an Odyssey clock from Viking Clock Company located in Foley, Al that was shipped to me from an Estate. During shipment, the suspension spring broke just below the top connector. I would like to know if there are replacements available.
Thanks,
AnswerSince the Odyssey makes use of a quartz rotating pendulum movement you might have a problem finding a suitable replacement. These clocks are quite rare, I have seen but one. Its problem was also a broken suspension spring. I was unable to find a suitable replacement through the channels available to me, my solution was to make one up myself using the broken pieces as my pattern. I suggest you take this unique clock to a jeweler for possible repair. Somewhere in my old shop notes I probably have my solution documented. As time permits I will try to locate them. I do recall, locating a suitable pattern in Charles Terwilliger's book, "REPAIR GUIDE, The Horolovar 400 Day Clock". Of course I found that information after I had solved the problem from scratch. My point in mentioning this is that a jeweler might have access to this book and could simply lay the broken pieces on similar looking set-ups until the correct one is found then simply order one from a materials house. I hope this helps you. I regret that I did not add one of these clocks to my collection when I had the chance. Regards WJP.
