Clocks, Watches/1907 Elgin railroad watch w/Wadsworth case

Question
Hi Mr. Mills,
I've recently been going through some old things of my fathers, and became interested in an old pocket watch which dad had told me was my grandfathers. He was a conductor.
I've been able to find out that this particular watch was made around 1907. I'm looking for any info on the case. It says "wadsworth" and the number 1151564 is stamped under the name. Gold colored, but probably not gold. I was wondering if there was a name for this case design. Looks like 4 oak leaves on front and back of the case. Watch works number is 13454671 if that helps.
Thanks,
Kevin Collins
AnswerKevin,
No, there is not a specific name given to the designs for watch cases. When your grandfather was buying this watch, the movement and the case would be purchased separately and then the watchmaker would put them together. Wadsworth was one of several case makers.
You have a wonderful piece of history in this watch. Many people collect pocketwatches and in particular, railroad grade pocketwatches. You have a great advantage because not only do you have a railroad watch, you have one that was actually used on the railroads. To make it even better, it is a family heirloom.
If I may make a suggestion, write down the family lineage of the watch: As much information you know about your grandfather ie, where/when he was born, what railroad he worked on and when. Everything you can. Do the same with your father. It will make the sentimental value increase to the next generation you hand it over to.
Congratulations on this wonderful family heirloom.
Kind regards,
Melvin
