Question
QUESTION: I would like to know how to fix a grandfather clock that stopped working about 3 years ago. I inherited it and have no idea how to "reset it" - all three weights have risen to the top and I can't figure out how to get them to drop to the bottom. I think it has a Hermle Movement #1151-060H (114cm/60)at least that is what I think is written on the back of the clock mechanism/gear box.
Can any only tell me if there is a repair kit for it or if it's worth having someone come and take a look at it? Thanks!

ANSWER: If the clock has sat 3 years without working, he will, as a bare minimum, need cleaning as the first order of business.  Since the weights are up and applying their full force on the motor there is to much friction present for of the weights to do their jobs.  In view of the circumstances you describe I do not believe it cost effective for you to have the clock cleaned, adjusted and repaired.  I would be inclined to replace the movement with a new one.  Not only will this save you money but you will end up with a clock better than it was new.  If you choose this route, insist on the new superior grade Hermle 1151-060.  Do not accept anything less, and above all do not accept a rebuilt movement.  If you wish I can direct you to an appropriate source for aquiring a proper movement.  If you want a do it yourself alternative let me know and I will provide you with a web site that might help you.  Regards WJP

QUESTION: Hi Mr. Perkins, thank you so much for your direction. I would like very much to know where to go for assistance with acquiring a new movement for my grandfather clock. Sincerely, Elisabeth

Answer
I suggest you acquire a movement from Butterworth Clocks Inc., 5300 59th Ave West, Muscatine Iowa, 52761.  Phone  1-563-263-6759.  Fax 1-563-263-0428.  E-mail  bci@muscanet.com
Mark is the largest dealer in mechanical clock movements in the USA.  He does sell to the public as well as to the trade. You can be assured he will provide the SUPERIOR grade of Hermle movement.  Ask for a Hermle 1151-060h for 114cm pendulum.
I further suggest you install this new movement yourself.  It is not difficult, a fairly obvious and straightforward task.  The most important thing to do is to carefully observe how you removed the old movement, then reverse the procedure.  Write me if you wish instructions.  Regards WJP
