Question
My recently purchased clock runs for one hour then stops. When I move the pendulum it runs again for one hour then stops. When it runs it runs accurately. Is this a major problem as? Can it be fixed? Many thanks.
Hi Donna,
There are many causes of a clock's stopping. If the clock is stopping at exactly the same hand position every time, I would look for the hands hitting either each other, the dial or the front glass. If it is stopping every time at a few minutes before the hour or half hour strike point, your problem lies in the chime or strike mechanism, which is jamming for some reason and in turn jamming the hands from moving.
If the clock is stopping after about an hour, but not at any particular hand position, the problem may be a need for lubrication or wear in the movement's bearings. On a fine French clock like Japy Frères, these are problems for a professional clock repairer.
It's also possible that the stopping is due to the pendulum being out of beat, but this is unlikely, as that problem usually causes a clock to stop within a few minutes.
