Clocks, Watches/Moving a grandmother clock

Question
I have a 6' grandmother clock that I have to transport from Mass. to Georgia.  What precautions do I have to take to move it.  I will have to transport it in a horizontal position.  Any advice will be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Brian,
Remove the weights and the pendulum first. If your clock has chains, tie them up tight at the underside of the seatboard so that they do not come off. If it has cables and pulleys, wind the weights most (but not all) the way up first, then secure the cables loosely with twist ties or string after removing the weights. Do not at any time touch the weights with your bare hands; use a glove or towel.
Open the side or back panels and check that the movement is secure on the seatboard, and tighten any screws as necessary. Do not overtighten.
Secure the chime rods with styrofoam or bubble wrap just enough to keep them from rattling around during the move and possibly breaking off.
If your clock has a removable finial, take it off so that it does not get lost in the move.
And finally, put the door and winding key in a plastic bag and attach it somewhere inside the clock so that they do not get lost in the move.
Your clock can now be moved like any piece of fine furniture, and can be laid down on its back if necessary.
