Clocks, Watches/Waltham pocket watch does not wind

Question
I have an 1883 7 jewel 18s Waltham, sidewinder, lever set. I am able to set the time, but cannot turn the pendant to wind -  it stays stuck as if it had been wound completely before a problem occurred. Counterclockwise, the pendant ratchets, but won't budge at all clockwise. Any clue as to what kind of repair may be needed? Thank you.

Answer
Tony,

Sounds like the mainspring needs to be changed.  That means that a watchmaker will perform a complete service that will entail taking the watch apart, inspecting the parts for any damage and replacing damaged pieces, cleaning, reassemble, and timing the watch.

After the service, the watch will run well for what it is: a 100 year old watch.

Don't expect it to keep time as well as a modern day quartz watch.

And don't expect a modern day quartz watch to be built to last a 100 years :)

Kind regards,

Melvin
