Clocks, Watches/clock that chimes incorrectly

Question
Our inexpensive mantel clock (made in China) strikes 12 times at 4,5, & 6 o'clcock and chimes correctly the rest of the time.  What can I do?

Answer
Hi D.P.,
Chinese clock movements usually use a chiming mechanism called a "rack and snail." You can browse my previous answers, where I have a photo of a rack and snail mechanism, and identify the parts I refer to in the following.
In your case, the rack tail is falling all the way down past the correct step on the snail, and is striking 12 times. This problem has a number of possible causes, and I can't identify which without seeing the clock. In any case, this is probably a job for a professional clock repairer, as these adjustments can be quite difficult.
