Question
Hi,my grandfather clock is about 12 years old and occasionally after winding the clock stops running(pendulum stops swinging)
If I continue to check on the clock and start the pendulum swinging the clock will start running sometimes after several attempts .Is it out of adjustment? Does it have to be oiled?
I would love for it to function properly
Thanks
Gary

Answer
Hi Gary,
There are many possible causes of a clock's stopping.
First, the pendulum may be out of beat. Please see my previous answers for information on checking and setting the beat on grandfather clocks.
Next, your clock may need lubrication or there may be wear in the bearings of the movement. In this case, you should have a professional clock repairer do a service call. He can oil the clock and tell you if there is bearing wear or other problems.
Also make sure that, after winding, the weights are not moving, the pendulum is swinging evenly, and the weights do not touch the pendulum at any time.
