Clocks, Watches/Clock movement replacement
Expert: William J Perkins - 4/22/2008
Question
I need to replace a movement in a wall clock. The identification on the plate is 79 Franz Hermle 351-30/55cm/88.18.
The pictures from two different suppliers (351-30A) are different than the movement I have. The hammers are on the side for both, but the hammer attachment point on the original movement is on the bottom of the movement. The hammer attachment point on the replacement movement is on the side and the hammers appear to be at different levels.
Will attachment hardware come with the replacement movement? The original movement is not plumb with the case. Should the replacement movement be mounted in the same relative position. I will send digital on opposite view to your e-mail address
AnswerThe 351-30A and the 351-030 do mount their hammers differently. Unfortunately my library is gone now and I cannot look it up. If memory serves me correctly the original 351-030 mounted to the case with screws securing the legs to the front of the case. The 351-030A sat on a seatboard and was held in place by hold down devices. I truly believe you should contact Mark Butterworth at Butterworth clocks, 5300 59th Ave. West. Muscatine, Iowa 52761. I believe his e-mail is <bci@muscanet.com> Mark is the largest distributor of mechanical movement in the USA and can surely help you. To answer the other parts of your inquiry any replacement movement should be an exact reproduction of the original and installed in precisely the same manner. Movements are available with or without accessories. The legs that make the attachment to the case should come attached to the front posts. I really urge that you contact Mark, something is wrong here and he can help you. Regards WJP
