Question
QUESTION: Not sure if this is a real curio. on the website it shows free standing clocks. This one definatly hangs but has shevles. I cant seem to get the chime to where it is unmuted. I can hear it. It just seems to have a volume control I know that isnt the case. thanks

ANSWER: this is a key wound clock? wind in 3 places?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Yes Ken it is a key wound clock that winds in 3 places. It seems hard to wind and not sure how much is too much when turning the key.  Does that have something to do with the level of sound?

Thanks

Answer
wind it till it stops clicking. insufficient winding would slow it down or stop the chiming not change the volume.
the individual hammer heads should rest about 1/8" from their respective chime rods for optimum sound quality and volume.
a old or worn clock might be quieter due to wear in the lifting mechanism for the hammers. You can bend the hammer head "handles" or wires with a pair of long nosed pliers to adjust to the 1/8"
