Clocks, Watches/Hour Striking
Expert: William J Perkins - 5/10/2008
QuestionMy mother's grandfather clock stopped, and she attempted to rewind it, and set the correct time.
Now, it runs fine, shows the correct time, and chimes at the correct quarter hour(s).
However it is an hour off on the hour. For example when it is 4:00, it chimes 3 times.
I have tried to synchronize it by moving the hands forward and backwards, but it stays 1 hour off.
Any suggestions?
Thank you!
AnswerYou will have to remove the hand to effect the change you need. Before starting this process stop the clock. Remove the minute hand then the hour hand. The minute hand is held in place by either a nut or a pin. The hour hand is held in place by fricion fit, simply pull it straight off. Once removed replace the hand so that it rests on the numeral last struck. In this instance the clock struck 3 times and the hand was on 4. Move the hand from 4 to 3, replace the minute hand in the precise position you removed it from. You know have the clock synchronized. Start the clock and reset to correct time. You are done.
