Clocks, Watches/Howard Miller question
Expert: William J Perkins - 5/24/2008
QuestionI have a new Howard Miller grandfather clock.
model # 610-900. The clock chimes not on the hour but 7 minutes past the hour, quater hour etc. The clock had been working fine. but when I reset it this past time this new problem arose. I thought I would let the clock run and see if it corrected itself but it did not. I tried taking the minute hand off and place it correctly on the hour, but the peg is square notched and I could only move it to those locations. I have tried to hold the hour hand and just move the minute hand but no luck. The hour hand does not seem to come off, and I have finally learned to not force things. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response.
AnswerRemove the minute hand, turn it over, you will note the square hole is actually in the form of a friction fit bushing. To correct your problem you need only to take a pair of pliers and turn the bushing to a poition where the chime will start at a quarter hour. Do this then secure the hand to its shaft via the hand nut. The hour hand is friction fit to its arbor, if you need to alter its position, you simply force it to where it needs to be to reflevt the correct time.
This should take care of your problem. Regards WJP
