Clocks, Watches/Pocket watch yellowing of crystal

Question
I have an Elgin, 1913 pocket watch size 16S 17J in a gold filled case. It's working and I've had it for almost a year but it has always had a yellowed crystal. My question is, is this yellowing possibly intentional or just from age? If from age, is it a sign of a potential problem with the watch?

Answer
Jason,

The degradation of the plastic emits corrosive gases that cause rust on Hands, and possibly other internal movement components.

Newer plastics are not as likely to change.

If possible, change the crystal.  The watch will look better and you won't have to worry about any damage in the long term.

Kind regards,

Melvin
