Question
I have a Franz Hermle  141-030K3 and it chimes when ever it wants now.  Usually about 40 minutes after the fact :(

Answer
Hi Barry,

From your description, I believe you are saying that the clock does not chime at any particular incorrect point, but randomly. If it chimed at a wrong point, but always the same wrong point, it could indicate an incorrect adjustment or a jamming in the gear train. However, if it chimes randomly, it more likely indicates a stalling, rather than a jamming.

Stalling is usually due to either need for lubrication or wear in the bearings of the movement. You can try lubricating the movement yourself (see my recent answer on that topic), or you can have it done by a professional clock repairer, and he can also examine your clock for wear. If your clock is more than 15-20 years old, bearing wear is a significant possibility. The preferred repair for a clock with worn bearings is replacing the movement with a new one. www.clockmasteronline.com
