Clocks, Watches/Extra Chime

Question
We recently received a Quartz Wall Clock, with the name Blessing and Westminster Chime on it from a deceased family member. Unfortunately the chime strikes one extra on each hour. Do you perhaps know how to correct it?
Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Werner,

I'm going to assume that you mean that the clock strikes one hour AHEAD at each hour, in other words, 12 times at 11:00, then 1 time at 12:00. If it strikes one time too many at every hour, including striking 13 times at 12:00, then that is an unusual problem and the movement would have to replaced.

To correct striking one hour ahead, you must first access the hands. Some quartz movements have a bezel glass which must be removed, while others have the hands exposed. Set the clock to exactly 11:00. Unscrew the minute hand nut, then pull the minute hand straight off without turning it. Next, pull the hour hand straight off without turning it. Then replace the hour hand, pushing it straight on without turning the shaft, pointing to 12:00. Finally, replace the minute hand pointing to the "12". Your hands should now be synchronized with the strike.
