Clocks, Watches/Grandfather clock
Expert: William J Perkins - 6/27/2008
QuestionI have a grandfather clock. On the back plate it reads:
Peerless Made in Germany WY.
Then there are some funny letter like signs that I can't make out, one of which looks like an anchor.
Would this be an antique?
Also, how would I know which weight controls the chimes? My chimes are not working, and I am not sure if the problem has to do with the placement of the weights.
Thanks much.

How do I know which
AnswerI can make no judgement on your clocks antiquity without seeing it. An anchor is a part of the logo of quite a few clock companies. I suggest you go to your library and try to get a copy of Karl Kochmann's "Clock and Watch Trademark Index, European Origin". I am sure you will find helpful information from that source. Now as to the weights, The heaviest weight hangs on your right, as you face the clock, (the clocks left). If the clock is of three weight configuration the medium weight hangs in the center and the lightest on your left. If your clock is two weight driven, the heaviest weight drives the strike train.
I have looked Peerless up in Karl Kochmann's book and have found quite a few entries. To narrow the group down you would have to match the trade marks etc., from your movements backplate, to the graphics depicted in the book. From what I see there is good possibility your clock would have been produced before 1930, not old enough to qualify as an antique. Regards WJP
