Clocks, Watches/Grandfather clock does not run

Question
We have a homemade clock with Viking movement 111/133.  We cannot get it to run.  It used to run and not chime.  Now it chimes (if we force the pendulum to move) but won't run.  Is there some type of lubrication we need to use?  Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Karen,

There are many causes for a clock's failure to run, but the three most common are 1)the pendulum is out of beat, 2)the clock needs lubrication, and 3)the bearings in the movement are worn.

If you want to lubricate the clock yourself, you will need to remove the hands, then remove the dial and, in some cases, remove the movement from the clock. It's essential to use clock oil ONLY, never all-purpose or other oil, and NEVER spray oil or penetrating oil like WD40. Inexpensive long-tipped oilers are available from clock supply houses, both empty or filled with oil. You will want to place a small drop of oil at each point where a pivot (gear shaft tip) enters a bearing hole in the front and back movement plates. Be careful not to use too much oil, or it will drip down the plate and draw the oil out of the oil sink (the chamfered circle around each bearing hole). If you have a professional clock repairer lubricate your clock, he will do some additional lubrication and adjustments that are beyond the scope of this forum, set the beat and examine the bearings for wear.

For setting the beat, please browse my previous answers for detailed information. If the bearings in your clock are severely worn, you will need to either replace the movement with a new one or have the original movement overhauled.
