Question
Have a new 2214 which strikes at odd times when I move the minute hand ccw.  When I move the minute hand forward the hour hand does not follow,  When I finish moving the hands the clock will run for 7-10 minutes but does not seem to be running at the correct speed.  I fear I have broken the movement by moving the hands both cw and ccw.  Help!!!

Answer
Hi Larry,

It sounds like the movement has serious internal problems, but your turning the minute hand either clockwise or counter-clockwise should not have caused them. It is possible and normal for the movement to chime at odd times when turning the hands backwards.

If the hour hand does not follow when moving the minute hand forward, the internal gears are damaged or out of alignment. The clock's stopping after 7-10 minutes of course should never happen, and the timekeeping should be very accurate.

There is only one suggestion I can make, and it is a bit of a longshot. Try holding the setting button on the back of the movement firmly pressed in, while at the same time pressing in on the handshaft nut on the front of the movement, and moving the minute hand back and forth a couple minutes each way. If the gears that control the hands are out of alignment, this may correct them.

These movements have no repairable internal parts, so you may have to replace the movement.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
