Clocks, Watches/Hermle Cable Movement

Question
My question is multi-part!
First, I have a Hermle model 1161-853H / 94cm from a Hamilton Floor "Grandfather" Clock.

I have seen various SIMILAR model numbers beginning with 1161 but with, for instance, 053 or othe combinations and with different letters. Is it possible to explain what the differences / similarities are? I'm looking to replace this movement. I understand the 94cm versus other pendulum lenghts.

Also, I have worked on several movements but never a CABLE driven and while waiting for a replacement I'd like to "tinker" with this one.

What is INSIDE the drum on which the cable is wound? Is that where the spring is wound? Can / SHOULD this be dis-assembled for cleaning and if so is there a "best" method you can point to?

THANKS so much for your valuable time!

Joe

Answer
The 1161 was made in two variants, the 1161-050 and the 1161-853.  The difference between the two is that the 050 is chain driven and the 853 cable driven.  With exception of the drive drums, parts are interchangeable.  As far as what is inside the cable drum, there is nothing except a hole through which the cable passes and is tied off inside to secure.  If you have not already ordered you replacement movement I suggest you use Marc Butterworth as your source.  Marc is the largest dealer in mechanical clock movements in the USA.  I have had the pleasure of doing business with this firm for many years.  Marc is a lifetime member of AWI and NAWCC.  The address is Butterworth Clocks Inc., 5300 59th Ave. West, Muscatine, Iowa, 52761.  Phone 1-563-263-6759, FAX 1-563-263-0428.  Email: bci@muscanet.com   Regards WJP
