Question
Hi, I wonder if you could tell me why the Morbier clock double chimes the hour, please?

Answer
Hi Keith,

The Morbier, or "Comtoise" clock is a "repeating strike" clock. It is designed to strike the hours a second time, a couple minutes after the initial strike. I've heard various explanations of the purpose of this repeat strike, but I think the most likely is that it is a reminder strike, a sort of simple "snooze alarm". These were cottage industry farmer's clocks, and waking up on time is, of course, critical for a farmer's early morning routine.
