QUESTION: Hello Mr. Perkins,
I have a Salem ships bell clock 8 day that has the proper ships bell at the hour and half hour. 4 dings at 2, 5 dings at  2:30, and 8 dings at 4 oclock, etc.  This seems to work properly.

But the problem is after the half hour dings, I get a single ding at 35 minutes after the hour.

I am a retired shipboard Marine, and this is driving me dingy.

ANSWER: After your clock announces the time the hammer is left in a lifted position and does not release until 35 min have passed.  The lever or cam controlling this action requires adjustment.  I would suggest you take your clock to a qualified clock repair person.  Don't be afraid to question that persons credentials.  This is simple job but it does require the service of a well trained technician.  Ships clock are easily damaged.  Regards WJP

QUESTION: I noticed the hammer is threaded and looks like a nylon or other item should be screwed in but is not.

Could this the cause of the "lifted position"?

ANSWER: I doubt it.  I believe your problem is an out of position cam.  This is a situation where seeing and observation is essential.  Again regards WJP

QUESTION: I purchased a ship bell clock advertised as a Chelsea Bell Clock.  When received I noted the clock said "Bell Clock Co." at 12 o'clock.
At 6 o'clock it said  "8 day bell strike".  I fear this may be a replica and not related to the quality of a Chelsea.  I can still return the clock.

Is the Bell Clock Company a subsidiary of Chelsea or related in any way?

I no longer possess reference works that would be needed to research this matter.  Like most commercial endeavors the clock industry was exposed to mergers, buy outs and all sorts of financial slights of hand.  Very little is left of what was once one of the glories of American commerce.  As far as the matter you presented me, I have to profess my ignorance.  I will pursue the matter through channels yet available to me.  If I find anything I will relay such information on as a follow up.  Regards WJP
