Question
Our Grandfather clock has the three weights for winding and have noticed the middle one goes down before the outside ones do. Clock doesn't chime at all. It belonged to my mother-in-law and the wife doesn't trust me yet in the problem area . I don't even know how to wind the thing. Am worried for her sake. I don't know what to specifically ask so if you need more info email me back. Can you help?

Answer
presume the weights hang on chains? - to wind, pull down on the free end of the chain so the weight is pulled to the top under the movement. do all three same way.
the weights are probably not all the same and to have the chime and strike work at all the heaviest of the three belongs on the right as you face the clock--next heaviest in the middle.

check the above and try again -- if not working still - try pulling some on the right weight while moving the minute hand clockwise through a complete hour or so.--advise your findings
