Question
Without paying a fortune for a mainspring winder what is the best way of winding an uncoiled mainspring for reinsertion back into the barrel.

Cheers

Answer
after 36 years in the biz - I still do not have a winder. Put the spring in by hand - start with the outside tail and get it hooked on to the hook in the outside barrel wall and then just spiral the rest of the spring in by hand - the last few turns you might want to use thin nosed pliers to grip and twist the inside few turns. Settle the spring in by slamming the barrel on a hard wood surface as needed.
