Question

Regal Jung Mantle Cloc
I have just been given the above clock as a gift. It appears to be Art Deco style with the original key and lovely movement in the back. I just love it and wonder if you can shed more 'historical' light on this for me please? It is not working of its own accord - it will tick and chime when moved but after sitting for a short period (couple of minutes) it stops once more. I think it may have been overwound by the previous owner. I do intend having it repaired so any information you can pass on would be appreciated. I am in Sydney Australia. Thank you

Answer
Hi Christine,

"Overwinding" is probably the most common myth about clocks. There really is no such thing. If a clock is fully wound, but does not run, it will stay wound, and you will not be able to wind it any farther, so it appears to be "overwound".

There are many causes of a clock's failure to run, but the most common is that the pendulum is out of beat. Please browse my previous answers for detailed information on setting the beat. Other possible causes are need for lubrication and wear the movement's bearings. A professional clock repairer will be able to set the beat for you, and also tell you if your clock has any other problems.

I cannot be of any assistance on historical information. As I indicate in my profile, I answer clock repair and service questions only. I do not do appraisals, identification, history or dating.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
