Question
1.  Music intermittent, when it works, it plays while cuckoo calls.  Probably an
adjustment to wire holding regulator fan.
2.  What is the purpose of the spring on the back door?  It looks as if it could be
attached to a "u" clip coming from the movement.  Everything I can find,
including assembly  videos, it's just there and not attached.

Sounds like a defect in the music box release mechenism.  Since there are so many varieties in components of cuckoo clock I would need a great deal more information for a proper diagnosis and treatment.  I am going to refer you to a book by Karl Kochmann within which a solution most likely would be presented.  The name of the book is "The Black Forest Cuckoo Clock".  In my estimation there are few, if any, with superior knowledge on Cuckoo's than Karl.  Most libraries have a copy in their technical materials.  Also, I have seen them for sale on ebay many times.  Regards WJP
