Question
I have a wall hanging grandmother clock. I know nothing about it.The front of it says Rew England Clock. I keep it running. It has a little water cap at the top with a air bubble to make sure is level and it is. The pengelium that's swings back and fourth you can be lowered and higher. Now please talk to me like I'm two because it might be something very simply but I have no knowledge when it comes to this clock. I don't know the proper way to take care of it or how to set. I do know not to touch the weights because they our brass and will rust but that's about it. Thank you for your time to help me.

Answer
Hi Heather,

You can set this modern clock (antiques are different) by turning the minute hand forward or backward. It is a good idea to set the chimes to "Silent" when you do this to prevent it from chiming while you are setting. If it ever does start to chime when setting, immediately stop turning the hand and wait for it to finish chiming before turning again. If you set it by turning the minute hand forward, and you do not turn it to Silent first, you must stop at each chime point and let it chime before starting to turn the hand again. Never try to set it by turning the hour hand.

There is very little else that you have to do to care for the clock. Wind the weights once a week, or any time before the weights reach the bottom and the clock stops.

You should have the clock oiled by a professional clock repairer every few years.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
