Clocks, Watches/Ingraham clock question.

Question
I have an Ingraham "Coronet" black mantel clock with a patent date of 1885 on the back panel. I would like to have it completely repaired/restored as it belonged to my great grandparents. It seems to be in good condition considering its age, though the dial has some possibly irreversible damage. Due to my inexperience and the age of the clock I would rather pay someone to restore it for me. Are there any reputable companies that specialize in clock restorations? If not, where can I buy the parts needed to do the repairs myself if I must.

Answer
Hi Michael,

I am not clear whether you are referring to case restoration or cleaning and overhaul of the movement.

Case restoration is generally a job for antique furniture restorers, and there is generally someone in most areas who does this kind of work. I would emphasize that you need an ANTIQUE restoration specialist, not a restorer/repairer of modern furniture. Also, I'm sure that a web search would turn up numerous restoration specialists. I'm afraid that I don't know of anyone in particular that I could refer you to.

Movement restoration/repair/overhaul is, of course, a job done by clockmakers. There are often local people in this profession. Again, I would strongly emphasize that you should seek a full-time professional who is experienced with antique clocks. Additionally, there is a number of such professionals on the Internet, myself among them. You can ship your clock to many of them for repair, and thus have a quality repair done, even if there are no local clockmakers in your area.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
