Question
hi, i recently purchased a elgin 400 day globe mantle clock. it seemed to be working when i bought it but once i got it home it stopped. i thought maybe it was not wound tight enough so i began to wind it and discovered that it just keeps winding and winding. i do feel some tention while winding but it never actually gets tight. could this be any other problem besides a broken main spring? if so is there any way i could possibly repair it myself? thanks mike

Answer
Hi Mike,

Your clock either has a broken mainspring or the inner or outer mainspring end has come loose from the shaft or the barrel.

In either case, I would not advise attempting to repair it yourself. You would have to disassemble the entire movement, removing all the gears, remove the cap from the mainspring barrel, and replace or reattach the mainspring. You would need a mainspring winder to remove and replace the mainspring without damaging it. Additionally, 400-Day clocks are notoriously difficult to set up and adjust.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
