About John Newman
Expertise
Because of the variations of clock values throughout the world, and particularly the lack of data on modern production clocks, I regret that I CANNOT DETERMINE CLOCK VALUES. ALSO, WATCHES ARE NOT MY FIELD. However, I can advise the clock owner on proper maintenance of a clock to keep it running, small corrections and adjustments and how to move a clock without damaging it. I can also advise on obtaining parts for clocks. It helps if you can send any information on the clock movement which is usually found on the back plate of the movement. I have been involved in building, repairing and restoring clocks for about 30 years and was plant engineer in the mid 90's and later operations and engineering consultant at Emperor Clock Company in Fairhope, Alabama. I now have my own clock shop.

Experience
One of my greatest accomplishments was traveling to China to assist a clock factory in building clocks to the standards which we required. With the proper specifications and quality control, some beautiful clock cases were built. The factory people from the wood carvers to the plant manager were very congenial, friendly and I left a lot of wonderful friends when I returned from my trips.

Question
we bought a Viking regulator at an estate sale and it is missing the pendulum and bob.  We have a complete 18" rod without the bob, but don't know if that is the proper one for the clock. (we bought several clocks and this was in  pieces, but there was a box with bits and pieces in it),
Anyway if the rod is correct then all we needs is the bob. The numbers on the movement are  Franz Hermle - 141-070.  66cm over 80.16. It is also missing the bottom finial. Do you know what that should look like or where we could get one? Also the size of the bob.I have a very good camera if you need pictures.  You also told one reader about a tool you had made for putting clock chains back on.  Could you send pics of that too?
Thanks a million for your help.  Your site has been very helpful to us.

Answer
Marilyn, I am familiar with the movement but photos would help.  Send one of the complete front of the clock and one of the pendulum rod.  I'm not sure which type of regulator it is.  Is it an octagonal school house type or a rectangular case?  Later on I might need the dimensions from the bottom of the pendulum hanger to the center of the glass (school house type) or the bottom of the hanger to the center of the glass and the glass opening dimensions of the rectangular type.  Reply to my email address below and I will be able to receive the photos and send you photos and details.
