Clocks, Watches/Faulty repair, can I fix?
Expert: Kenneth Saunders - 1/2/2009
QuestionQUESTION: Took Grandfather clock for clean/repair. Dodgy older gentleman working out
of his house ( I KNEW I should not leave it, but..) So, 4 months later I get it
back.. it keeps time perfectly ( about 1 sec loss a day), so I'm happy with that.
However, it has 3 chimes, but it sounds like it is playing them backwards!
Could this guy have mis-installed some part, such that it plays ok, but
sounds wrong? I don't have any formal training on clock repairs.. do I assume
correctly this is a job for an expert? I DON'T want to take it back to this guy
again ( my problem is the nearest clock repair place is 130Km from my
house)
Thanks in advance for your advice,
Cheers

QUESTION: Thanks for quick reply... it's appreciated.
FYI the repair on clock.. the chime chain cog wheel broke 2 teeth and the
weigh came crashing down on the floor of the unit. The repair man said he
replaced this part, as well as cleaning it.
My wife has corrected me.. the tunes are ok, but in the wrong order. Its
playing the 30 min tune at 15, the 45 min tune at 30 and the 15min tune at
45.. I hope this makes sense. The hourly tune is also mixed up, like it's
playing 30,45,15 or something like that.
The front faceplate has Emperor as the name. The back plate has the
following.
UW03015B 308378 and URG05 ( could be UR60S) Made in Germany, No(0)
Jewels, unadjusted
Thanks again for your assistance!
Cheers

ANSWER: Urgos was the maker of the mechanism.UW03015B is their part#
sounds like the minute hand is put on wrong. when you find where it plays the full 16 notes of the Westminster tune and the hour strike then remove the round nut holding the hand on and replace the hand pointing at 12 and put the nut back on. the quarter after should then be 4 decending notes. advise how this works......

QUESTION: Ken.. thanks again.
Maybe I have to describe the problem a little clearer. It is playing 4 notes on
the 15, 8 notes on the 30, 12 notes on the 45 and the full 16 notes on the
hour.
However, it 'sounds wrong'. if you look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westminster_Quarters
it says is should play
15 - (1)
30 - (2,3)
45 - (4,5,1)
60 - (2,3,4,5)
However.. I 'think' ( I'm tone deaf :-) ) it is playing
15 -(2)
30 - (3,4)
45 - (5,1,2)
60 - (3,4,5,1)
Answerok got it
the carriage drum with the pins on it on the right rear of the movement has a drive gear on the opposite end of its shaft that it is on and between the two brass plates. put the chimes on quarter after so they just have finished doing 4 notes only. loosen the set screw(s) on the drive gear and rotate the drum by hand till you get 4 decending notes to JUST finish playing - retighten the setscrews and test to see if all the tunes start and finish properly without the last note not playing or additional notes beginning to play(if so adjust again slightly.
