Question
I have just purchased a Gustav Becker 2 weight regulator.  It did not come with weights, pulleys, or cables.   My question is, what are the correct weight to use on both sides and what type of cable to use.  Catgut or Grand Father type.   I am a hobbiest at clock repair, and feel that I'm up the challenge, just need the specs.   The movment also has a seconds bit.

Thanks so much,
Robert

Answer
Right up front, I am particularly partial to Gustav Becker clocks.  That being aid I'll get to you inquiries.  As to proper weight, I cannot answer this without actually seeing the clock.  Generally speaking a Becker in normal operating condition requires minimal weight to operate.  In my opinion the generic weights one acquires through the clock materials industry are far to heavy.  I would suggest you acquire a set of generic weight shells and with lead shot, load the shell for the time train to a weight where the clock operates accurately.  Replicate that weight for the strike train.
Now as to the type of cable, use braided line (actually squid line)  Such line is available from materials houses for that precise purpose.  You will find pulleys from such a source also.  I suggest you peruse the on-line catalogs for the following houses for your needs.  Merrit's Antiques <www.merritts.com>, Ronell Clocks <www.ronellclock.com> ,or, TimeSavers Inc., <www.timesavers.com>.  I am sure you will find everything you need from either of these sources.  They all have 800 telephone numbers as well which you can obtain from the online catalogs.  You will find their countermen to be very knowledgeable and helpful.  Let me know how you make out.  Regards WJP
