Question

8 day clock made in Fr
Hello William,  I bought a chipped, bashed 78 year old clock from a charity shop. I love it and my wife hates it making well worth the 10 sterling. It is running well though a bit erratic; I only want to know how to keep it serviced without experts expenses. I do have a lot of mechanical experience but not at fine clock levels.  Thanking you in anticipation.   Gordon

Answer
My compliments, you have a nice little clock there, made by Japy Freres & Co., (Japy Brothers) of Beaucort, France.  I would caution you about repairing this clock yourself.  This is a well made movement with precision balance wheel.  Thses things are very sensitive.  I suggest you confine yourself to refreshing the lubricant, now and then.  You can buy kits for this purpose on the inter-net.  The kit includes appropriate lubricants as well as instructions.  You can find such a kit @ <howtorepairclocks.com/clock-oil.html>  Regards WJP
