Question
Thanks for your answer Martin. Very helpful. Yes, my 'cog' and 'arm' were the ratchet assembly you describe. The key to wind the clock only turns one way, freely, with no effect, and does not wind the clock. I note you say it could be either the mainspring which has broken or its end has slipped off the stud which holds it. Is there any way of knowing which it is likely to be? The winding key will only turn in one direction, so, according to your description, the ratchet assembly is OK.

Thank you too for the weblink to the London Clock Company. You are right, I have only wound the clock entirely normally and not in any 'abusive' fashion since I have had it and am dismayed that what was quite an expensive clock has apparently broken so seriously so soon after purchase.

Once again, thank you for your help.

Best wishes

Alison

Answer
Hi again Alison,

There is no way of knowing which problem you have until the clock is entirely disassembled and the mainspring barrel opened. As a practical matter, however, it makes very little difference, because the greatest part of the repair cost is in the labor of disassembly and reassembly. The mainspring itself could cost anywhere from a couple pounds to perhaps £30 (just guessing at these prices).  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
