Clocks, Watches/Leather tip on gong hammer

Question
I have an antique wall clock that has a changing sound of the gong.  The tip of the hammer appears to be very brittle and is this causing a tone change?  Where can I get a replacement hammer or hammer tip?

Answer
Hello Ron,

I use leather boot strings in most cases.  A variety of sizes are available.  It takes a little shaping and then I harden them with a drop of super glue if you find the sound is too mellow or soft.

Give it a try as you maintain the historical value of the clock and can be reversed if needed.
