Question
I inherited my Mother's Grandfather clock and the chimes don't work. Once in a while I'll hear 'one' low pitched chime and that doesn't happen on the "hour". Is there an adjustment I can make to solve this problem ? The instructions I received with the clock don't have anything about chime adjustments, just the basic,"How to set up your clock for the first time" and minor adjustments.

Answer
Hi Virgil,

There are many possible causes of chime failure, but it is probably not a matter of an adjustment.

First, make sure that the heaviest weight is on the right (as you look at the clock). There may be a chime shut-off that is not very apparent. If there isn't a lever on the dial of the clock, look inside the clock and see if there is a large L-shaped piece preventing the hammers from moving. If there is, pivot this out of the way.

The most common cause of chime failure is need for lubrication or wear in the bearings of the movement. A professional clockmaker can do a service call, lubricate your clock, and look for any wear in the bearings. Bearing wear usually happens when the clock is about 20 years old or more, and requires either a movement replacement or an overhaul. Both of these are relatively expensive.  http://www.clockmasteronline.com
